This is due to the continent's strong growth potential and the increasing number of successful startups that have emerged from Africa in recent years. The five active angel investors who are interested in African startups are:

Rising Tide Africa

Rising Tide Africa functions as part of a global movement of The Rising Tide Program for Africa. It constitutes a group of women angel investors leveraging their network and capital to impact the continent.

Founded in 2016, Rising Tide Africa engages in educating and training women to become angel investors through its program while offering them the opportunity to build a diversified portfolio of investments and receive mentoring from other women who are experienced angel investors.

Addis Ababa Angels Network

Addis Ababa Angels Network is a group of individual investors aiming to promote economic development and sustainability in Ethiopia.

They believe in the transformational capacity of a strong startup ecosystem in the Ethiopian economy. Hence, the members have come together to draw on their experiences and consolidate their financial resources to back early-stage technology, and tech-enabled innovative businesses.

The Addis Ababa Angels Network offers early-stage funding to startups with innovative ideas for a product or service. They provide equity investment, mentorship, and diverse expertise to launch and grow the business.

Founded in 2020, the network also invites investors to get involved with economic sustainability from the ground level. There are many ways to get involved, such as, investing, being a community partner, being a funding partner, or being a business associate who can help provide essential expertise to early-stage startups with seed capital, guidance, and much-needed support.

The Cairo Angels

The Cairo Angels is a formal angel investment network investing in and supporting early-stage startups in Egypt and MENA region. Established in 2012, Cairo Angels convenes regular investment meetings to review pre-selected potential investees that meet the Cairo Angels investment criteria. Members may join virtually or physically in either Cairo or London.

While angels make their own investment decisions, Cairo Angels facilitate due diligence for opportunities that receive interest from investors, negotiate terms and finalize deal closing. Post-investment, the Cairo Angels also provides portfolio management services for its investors. Angels invest their personal money for a minority equity stake in the business.

SSEAN does not invest directly into businesses – only members can. SSEAN is sector agnostic. They invest in post-traction startups that have already established product-market-fit at the very early stage and looking to scale.

Mo Angels

Mo Angels is the first Syndicated Angel Investment Group in Mauritius. It was built in 2020 to fund early-stage startups. They are passionate individuals who believe in the power of many to propel entrepreneurs to a new stage.

Their geography is Mauritius and wider Africa. If a startup is based outside Mauritius, its policy is to co-invest with a local investor or angel group.

They are sector agnostic but have adopted the International Finance Corporation exclusion list. Startups must have entered the commercial stage, meaning their product or service is customer-ready. Ideally, they have started to earn revenue from early adopters.

They focus on innovative companies that tackle meaningful user or customer problems. The startup must solve this problem uniquely and sustainably with a scalable business model.
